“I doubt that such a thing as ‘no regrets’ exists.” He felt nauseous and panicked, pressured to make a decision without letting anyone down. How could any man choose between two such wonderful women and two such impossible options? This should never have happened.

“I’ll leave it with you. Remember, there is no wrong decision.” Darcy gave him a sad smile and faded from view as the Com-Dec app whirred, fizzed and shut down into blank silence.

There is no such thing as a wrong decision. What person in their right mind would think to utter such a statement when a man’s heart and conscience was at stake?

Darcy’s image flickered on again for the briefest of seconds before the screen blanked out but a wisp of sound remained, barely loud enough for Elliot to discern the words. “Oh, and Elliot? Remember that tricky little matter of the time fold that we discussed earlier? We talked about the potential for two instances of forward-moving time to occur over the same period with a very different outcome in each circumstance. I’m terribly, terribly sorry to be the one to tell you this, but we also have to talk about the dire and unsavoury possibility of you and the Knave being one and the same person.” The last unbelievable notes of Darcy’s voice drifted eerily back while the screen remained stubbornly blank, and then his voice too was gone.
